Bucharest has 13 authorized hostels

Cheap accommodation alternative: 10 euro per night, shared

Bucharest is one of the most expensive capital cities from Europe in terms of tariffs practiced for accommodation at the hotel units. Practically, in the capital city it is difficult to find accommodation for a price under one million lei, with one exception: in hostels. The tariffs practiced by those start from 10 euro/night, an eventual disadvantage being that practically the room is shared with several persons. However, there are only 81 authorized hostels at national level, of which 13 are situated in Bucharest.

The capital city of Romania in terms of accommodation tariffs is over the European average level. So, according to a Deloitte study, that analyzed the interval April 2007- April 2008, the average price of a hotel room in Europe is of 108 euro, against the average level of 129 euro in the capital city of Romania. The tariffs from Bucharest are over 25% against the ones from 2007, and the hotel keepers anticipate that these could still increase in the next two-three years, due to the insufficient offer. Over the tariffs practiced in Bucharest there are ranged the tariffs from Paris, France (on average 229 euro), Moscow or Geneva. The tariffs from Bucharest are comparable with the ones from London, Dublin or Frankfurt. Much smaller are the average tariffs of the hotel rooms from Berlin, Germany (89 euro), Lisbon, Portugal (95 euro) or Ankara, Turkey ( 123 dollar). One of the causes for which the capital city of Romania is still quite expensive is represented by the structure of classification levels. So, in Bucharest there are about 9% of the accommodation places in hotels of the country. In a city in which the tourism is mainly of businesses, there have mainly being developed units of superior classification, starting from three stars and up. So, three quarters of the accommodation places from Bucharest are from three stars up. The tariffs practiced by the three stars units start from 65 euro per night (hotels) and 50 euro (apartments). For two stars, the more convenient tariffs are situated to the level of about 40 euro per night, in double room. In these terms, the hostels offer is worth to be taken into account, being more appropriate for students. In Bucharest, there is also a certain category of hostels: of three stars, with high tariffs, from 50 euro per night, breakfast included, double or single room. These also host offices and depositing spaces, situation that normally is allowed for the hostels till three stars, with the condition of not occupying more than 15% of the accommodation capacity of the unit. In Bucharest there are authorized by the General Direction of Authorization and Place privatization within MIMMTPL a number of 13 units type hostel, that gather 425 places. Officially, in the capital city there is no hostel classified to one star. The officials MIMMTPL state that it is possible that the number of hostels to be more numerous, but that the owners haven’t solicited the authorization or that the process is in progress, situation valid also in case of hotels.

The maximum number of beds/places in a hostel room, according to the methodological norms concerning the structures of touristic reception, depends of the classification of these units. So, for units of three stars, there are accepted maximum four beds, and for the ones of two stars mostly ten. The one star units can have, without problem, ten beds in one room. The three stars hostels must have sanitary equipment (bath tube or shower, basin and toilet), but the ones of two and one star must have common sanitary equipment, separated by genders, so: minimum one toilet, one shower and one basin for 10 persons. As for the beds, these must be with box-mattress, the dimension being of minimum 80 x 190 centimeters. The distance between beds must be of minimum 75 centimeters. For the one star units it isn’t compulsory to assure toweling for face or bath, fridges or refrigerating minibars or TV sets. Concomitantly, at two, respective one star, there aren’t compulsory the moquettes, carpets or rugs.

At national level there are authorized 81 units type hostel. The total number of beds from the hostels situated in the country it is raised to 3.189, most of them being classified of two stars –that sum up 3.189 beds.
