The number of people who didn’t pay their loans doubled in the last 12 months
According to the Banking Risks Principal Office, this year’s unpaid debts formed 2.5% of the total of loans. Even more, 200.000 people were in default for loans of over 20.000 RON, meaning almost 20% of the clients in this loan margin.
Comparative to the values recorded last year, the number of bad loaners doubled, from 1.15% to 2.5% in the period of May 2008 – May 2009. BNR (Romanian National Bank) data shows that at the end of May 2009, over 5.75 billion RON of all loans were debt. This when, in May 2008, the total of unpaid loans was only 2.28 billion RON – meaning a 151.7% increase over this period of 12 months.
On the retail crediting segment, debt percentage didn’t reach an alarming level. “Debts, as well as new loan requests had an oscillating evolution, but on an upwards scale” said Serban Epure general director of the Credit Office. According to the data provided, the total of unpaid debt accumulated was recorded, in April, at 1.56% of the total of credits granted to the population.
