The Romanian Parliament removed the government from power
The Romanian government was unseated by the Parliament yesterday, but the current prime-minister can still perform his duties for 45 days, as an acting prime-minister. During this time he will only sign the necessary documents to administer present public affairs. In other words, until the new government is installed, executive power in Romania is frozen.
With the vote of 254 senators and representatives, the impeachment motion “11 Against Romania” was adopted yesterday by the parliament, and the Boc government was removed from power. There were 176 parliament members against the motion.
Although they succeeded in removing the government, PSD and PNL political parties have no warranty that the PDL backed Boc Cabinet will be dissolved. According to the Romanian Constitution, following the unseating of the Government, the chief of state is the one who will name the new prime minister, after consulting with the Parliament. The fundamental law however, does not stipulate a specific timeframe in which the president should do so and neither forbids him to reinstate Emil Boc as prime-minister.
According to information given by sources in the Parliament, a new Government formula will be presented in a maximum of 10 days, during which time, legal procedures to appoint new ministers will be overtaken. Concerning the prime-minister position, things can go both ways. The Romanian president could choose a technocrat or could post-pone his decision until after the presidential elections.
