Presidential Election Final Results: Basescu – 32.44%, Geoana – 31.15%
Romania’s curent president, Traian Basescu, won the first round of the presidential elections held on Sunday. He obtained 32.44% of the votes and social democrat candidate Mircea Geoana got 31.15%, according to final results released Wednesday by the Central Electoral Bureau after the counting of ballots in all polling stations. Liberal candidate Crin Antonescu got 20.02% of the votes.
Next come far-rightist Corneliu Vadim Tudor (5.56%), Hungarian minority representative Kelemen Hunor (3.83%), independent Sorin Oprescu (3.18%) and Steaua owner George Becali (1.91%). The other five candidates obtained less than 1% each, according to the final results released by the Electoral Bureau.
Voter turnout was of 54.37%, which translates into 9,946,748 voters.
In Romania’s referendum held also on Sunday, 77.78% of voters supported a single-chamber Parliament, and 88.84% supported downsizing the Parliament to a maximum 300 MPs, according to the final results released Tuesday. Voter turnout at the referendum was of 50.95%.
