Ukraine has problems for 2012
Ukraine, co-host country of the European Football Championship from 2012, has broken off talks with a Taiwanese company which renovates the stadium where follows to be scheduled the final of the tournament, according to the agency sportbusiness.com. This incident turns up just days before the visit of Michel Platini, president of UEFA. Rostyslav Karandeyev, Sports Minister, stated that the negotiations had ended with Archasia Design Group about the company’s legal status in Ukraine.
In an e-mailed response, Eric Hsu, president of the company, stated that the decision of the minister is groundless and that the documents concerning the company’s status hadn’t been requested, when the company won, neither in May. The delays in modernizing the stadiums have been a hot subject, after in January, Platini complained of the too slow rhythm of the works. Since then started to spread rumors according to which Ukraine and Poland would fallow to lose the rights to stage together the tournament from 2012.
The stadium of 84.000 seats from Kiev was built in ‘20s of the last century and is one of the four stadiums in Ukraine which follows to host matches of the final tournament. The organizers face a series of logistic problems, including a half-built construction near, element which violates the security norms for the big stadiums.
